I've been on and off of Ortho Novum 7/7/7 for the last 13 years (in between kids, ect) and I never had ANY problems w/ it. My periods were regular & of normal duration. No headaches or other problems. When I went off of it, I had no problems becoming pregnant again.

But that has just been MY experience. It's hard to know how you will react to the hormones until you have been on it a few months.

Good luck!

Hi babycakes,

I started the pill 7 months ago so what I went through is still fresh in my mind. The doctor did a papsmear and that was it. There were no shots involved, at least not for me and I can't imagine there would be a need for it. As far as the side effects I had, I am taking the generic versions of Loestrin. (started with Microgestin and am now on Junel) Nevertheless, when I started with Microgestin, I had nausea for the first month and I can't really say it was breakthrough bleeding because I would start on the third week of the active pills and my period would end when I was getting ready to start the placebos, which means that I really only started once a month. I also had headaches every time I was on the placebos for the first three months (I have to admit sometimes they were brutal) and on the very third month and only then but the entire month, I had severe depression. Everything made me cry. I still remember making breakfast one morning and I didn't realize until the eggs were cooking that I didn't have any cheese (I was making an omelet) and I burst into uncontrollable tears. Then on one occassion I went to work and the fact that I dropped a pencil while I was using it made me cry. It was awful... I was an emotional wreck, but again, that only lasted for one month (although it did seem like forever) and when I started the 4th cycle, I was fine, although I always start my period during the active pills and never on the placebos. I think every pill will affect everyone differently. I would suggest that whatever you try that you give it at least three cycles before you give up as your body needs to adjust to the pill. Hope this helped a little bit. Take care and good luck. Lucy

Most women don't have bad side effects from birth control. Chances are you'll be fine if you get on something. Keep in mind though, the side effects from birth control are no worse than an unplanned pregnancy. If you get pregnant, you'll probably have morning sickness and mood swings and you'll certainly gain a lot of weight. Plus, if you're scared of doctors, there's way more doctor visits and tests, etc. with a pregnancy than with a simple appointment for birth control.

You shouldn't expect anything in particular. Most likely you'll start on a pill or the patch or whatever they prescribe for you and you may not even notice anything different. If you do have some side effects, then they'll probably go away in the first few months. Birth control does not affect your future fertility.

When you go to the doctor, they will do a pelvic exam, which isn't that bad. They just want to make sure you're healthy before giving you hormomes. Since you've had unprotected sex before, they might also want to make sure you don't have any sexually transmitted diseases. Some may not even have symptoms but can make you infertile, so it's good to catch them soon. Usually they don't take blood samples, but again even if they did, it's way less than you'd go through if you get pregnant and were going to the doctor for all the prenatal checkups.
