Emergency Contraception

My boyfriend and I (we've been living together for 5 months) had a condom break last night when we were having sex. I don't use any other means of birth control. I immediately went into a panic that I could get pregnant. He was very calm and cool about it.

We are both in our early 30s and were married/divorced before meeting each other. Neither of us have children from previous relationships. We both have good jobs with stable incomes.

My boyfriend and I have talked about having children but maybe in another year or two; however, he said if it happens now, he'll be nervous but he's ready. I, too, feel I'm ready, but I always wanted to be married when I had children and try to time it right to fit in with the rest of my life. As my boyfriend left for work this morning, he said it is my body and my decision. So, I called my doctor, and he's going to call a prescription into the pharmacy for the so-called "morning after pill." I have to take it within 72 hours of us having sex if I don't want to be pregnant.

Now I don't know if I want to take the pill or if I should just let mother nature take its course? Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi mturtles2001, welcome!

You decision, whatever it turns out to be is the most personal one possible. I think you should not let anyone talk you into going one way or the other. You should decide. However, you should know that EC is more effective the sooner it's taken. For more information see the EC website at: http://ec.princeton.edu/ Let us know how you're doing, ok?
