My doctor put me on Medroxyprogesterone (Provera) because of a hormone imbalance. I have too much estrogen. She also put me on it to stop the spotting I have. How long should it take for the bleeding to stop? Is this medication a good one to stop bleeding?

Each case is probably different as far as how long it takes to stop bleeding. It is possible that the Provera will help, as progestins tend to restrict the growth of the endometrium and help maintain it (like progesterone does) so that the blood vessels don't leak and the tissue stays intact.

Provera is a pill form of the Depo Provera shot--it's not typically used for birth control because of the possibility of birth defects, so if you're sexually active and there's a possibility that you're ovulating, please do be careful! But I would hope that the bleeding would stop soon--your doctor may have a better estimate of how long to wait before expecting any kind of results.

Good luck, I hope it works for you!
