HEAVY bleeding with Mirena?

Not sure if I should contact my Dr. but had a Mirena insterted last week at 9 weeks postpartum and I am bleeding heavily now. This is my second IUD. I had one several years ago and I hated it because it made my periods much heavier and more painful. I opted for the Mirena this time since the midwives raved about how it cut down menstrual flow and it was a good choice for me since I am breastfeeding. I can't figure out why I am bleeding this way since I really shouldnt be having a period since I am nursing so often. Its to the point where if I stand up, cough, sneeze or really anything else I feel it come gushing out. The cramps feel similar to after giving birth (the after pains). Anyone with suggestions or similar experiences?

TIA

Hi Jackie,

I have a non-hormonal IUD, but for the most part it is the same.. I just got my IUD a month ago and this (right now) is my first period with it in. For the first 3 days I bled like crazy! I can't ever remember a time I bled this much.. But from what I have read and been told, it is normal to bleed heavier during your first periods with the IUD.

As for yours being inserted after birth, I haven't had that experience. But I do remember others on this board saying that it is quite normal. I mean, your body just got done having a baby in it for 9 months, it might take a while for it to get back to normal (what normal is for you).

But, if you are at all worried, I would give the doctor a call.. Phone calls are cheap, especially for the peace of mind it gives.

I think you should definitely call your doctor for advice. Mirena is supposed to cut down on bleeding dramatically. My first period after I got mine was almost nothing. While it's possible that your IUD could be causing the bleeding, you shouldn't assume that it is. It's also possible there might be something else wrong and your doctor should check you out and find out why you're bleeding.

Have you checked your strings? My dr. said if expulsion occurs there will a lot of heavy bleeding. Just a thought, not trying to scare you. I have had my mirena since Aug 30, 04. I have not had a period since. I cramped a little when it was time but no period. I was on bcp's for 11yrs so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. My SIL also got mirena 3 mnths after the birth of her dd and she is breastfeeding & bled quite a long time after insertion. Not heavy but enough to annoy her. Knock on wood I have been completely opposite! WOOOOHOOOOO......B

I've had the mirena for over a year now...the first 3-4 months I had heavier periods that lasted 16+ days and came 2 weeks apart....They got lighter and lighter to where now basicly if I have a period I just spot for a few days.I went from using a double pack of kotex overnights pads to just a few pantiliners each month.Yeah,I'd call your dr....good luck
