Ortho-Tryclen Lo Question

DD just started taking Ortho-Lo about three weeks ago. She is supposed to start taking the reminder pills this coming Sunday but started her period yesterday. Does she need to finish taking this weeks active pills or just stop? Should she go on and take the reminder pills next week or start with a new pack on day one? I'm thinking she should start with a new pack on day one but want to check.

This is like the blind leading the blind here. I had my tubes tied when she was born 16 years ago and she's just 16 and doesn't have a clue. Thank you for your help!

Hi reddsmom0510, welcome!

Your DD should keep taking all her active and placebo pills, just as the instructions call for. Irregular bleeding is a very common side effect during the first 2 to 4 cycles when beginning oral contraceptives. Since you and DD are both new to hormonal contraceptives you might both want to read the posts in the FAQs about them: ‘How the pill works’, ‘Taking your pills correctly’, ‘Common pill side effects’, and ‘Irregular bleeding anyone?’ all are good reads for beginners. Let us know how she's doing, ok?

Good luck,

Thanks for the help! I thought this would be a very awkward and difficult experience for us and it was in the beginning - what mom wants to deal with her DDs sexuality to this extent and what 16 y/o wants her mom involved. But now we're able to joke around about some of it - she's having hot flashes right along with her 40 something mom! Don't get me wrong I take the need for her to have birth control very, very seriously but we have to have some humor to survive.

Anyway, I will check out those pages - thanks.
