Hey
I'm confused I keep hearing different things about when it's the worst or most unsafe time in your cycle to have sex. For ie. In my cycle I start my period the 1st of every month and it usually lasts for 3-5 days. So I don't understand, isn't it that right after I finish my period and right before are the safest times to have sex (with protection ofcourse)?? How long before and after is it *safest*?? When is it the least safe?? I don't understand, my mom says one thing, my friends say another, my aunts say something else... its confusing me :S

If you are cycling naturally it will depend on the length and regularity of your cycles as to exactly when the safest time for unprotected intercourse will be for you. The safest time is a few days after ovulation. However, the only way you are going to be able to tell for sure when you ovulate is to chart your fertility signs; basal body temperature, cervical position and cervical mucus. You can not count cycle days and be safe since natural cycles can be thrown off by illness and stress. If you have irregular or very short cycles it is possible that you could become fertile during your period so it is very important that you recognize and understand your fertile signs. A very good book on the subject is Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. It's easy to read and understand with picture and charts of the points being covered. TCOYF is available in most libraries and bookstores. I think TCOYF is a must read for anyone wanting to know how their menstrual cycle works. Thanks for posting. Come back and see us.
Good luck,

Hi Ash,
If you are using condoms as protection, and using them properly, you should be able to have sex at any time during the month and be protected.
But if you are not using condoms and only charting your cycle, the please read the book taht was suggested by Julie and learn as much as you can about it so you don't have any worries about getting pregnant.
