How long do I need to use backup for?

Hi I am currently taking a month off of bcp's (using condoms in the meantime), but next month I will most likely be starting Yasmin. In the past I was told that you need to use backup protection with the pill until you finish your first pack. When I asked the pharmacist if this was still true, she said to use backup for the first two to three months. When I read the package insert that came with the Yasmin, it said you only need to use backup for the first week. Which is right?
Thanks,
Amy

The patient information (provided by the manufacturer) that comes with your pills gives you the minimum amount of time you should use back-up. Some doctors and this board recommend that back-up be used for the entire first cycle while you are learning to take your pills correctly. That way if AF doesn't arrive when you expect or your flow is lighter/heavier or longer/shorter than when you were cycling naturally or on a different pill you won't have an 'Am I pg?' freak-out. Remember that it can take 3 cycles for your body to adjust to the new hormones. Let us know what you decide and how you like Yasmin, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
I'm kind of having that right now... it's my first month back on the pill and AF arrived a day late AND it's much lighter than it normally is... i'm not sure if i should take a test or not...
