IUD Lost and Found

I've had my IUD (paraguard copper only- no hormones) for about 5 1/2 years. I've been really happy with it and have rarely given it any thought. At my annual exam yesterday though, the Nurse Practitioner didn't see the strings at all! I honestly haven't checked for them for a long time. I am wondering if anyone else has ever had their IUD disappear!

I have to go in tomorrow for another more involved exam with an ultrasound. The nurse said either it was expelled (unlikely since I've had it for more than 5 years) or it migrated through the uterus to 'somewhere else'!

And.. am I no longer a candidate for the IUD? I really liked it and never want to use hormones or other methods again.

Thank You!

I don't have much experince as I've only had my IUD, which is the Mirena, for about 1 1/2 years. But when my gyn inserted it, she cut the strings too short and I've not felt them since about 3 days after insertation. I've had two vaginal ultrasounds done and its exactly where it's suppose to be! Now, getting it out is going to be a b*tch, but right now everythings good.

UPDATE:

I had a follow-up exam today and after much searching with scary-looking instruments and some discomfort, my OB-Gyn found the strings. They are just very, very short in up inside my cervix a little way.

So, I can keep my IUD and remember to take the whole day off next year for my annual exam so she can search for the strings again!
