An IUD by itself doesn't do damage to the fallopian tubes. The problems that can happen are if you have an IUD and then get a sexually transmitted disease. In that case, it is more likely to result in pelvic inflammatory disease, which can cause infertility and damage the tubes. Doctors are supposed to only give IUDs to women who are at low risk of acquiring STDs, so the doctor should ask questions about your sexual history, and whether or not you're in a monogamous relationship first. My doctor mentioned these things to me when I asked about an IUD and also asked me about my relationship status. When I said I was married, he then asked if we were monogamous and if I was positive about that.
