I am getting an IUD in, I have had a child. Does it hurt? Should I have someone drive me home?

Make sure your appointment is during your period so that your cervix is slightly open, this makes insertion easier. Take 800 mg of ibuprofen about a half hour to an hour before your appointment. It's often recommended to have someone to drive you home just in case. Some women have really bad cramps after getting an IUD, so better to be safe.

In my case, it didn't hurt when I got mine, and I haven't had a child. The insertion was easy. I had been worried about pain and my husband drove me to the appointment. As it turned out, I would have been fine driving myself home, but you never know. Some women have it harder, and it's even possible to feel a little faint during insertion.

yes,it hurts...More like heavy pressure than stabbing pain...I had lots of pressure even though my dr used a deadening shot "down there"...I took 600mg of ibuprofen before going to the drs office....and again later. The cramps came and went-weren't all the time.I didn't need anyone to drive me home....I had to rely on that dosage of ibuprofen for a few days....good luck.....

I'm nervous. I've had two children. One stillborn one doing awesome (my baby is 6!!) can hardly belive it. I haven't ever had bad cramps so I don't know how this will be.

My fiancee was supposed to take but now can't. I'm not going back to work but what about the following days afterwards.

you could have moderate to heavy cramps that come and go for a few weeks--I did...they weren't there all the time....keep ibuprofen handy.....the first few periods I had (for 3 months) were heavier than normal & lasted 16+ days & came every 2 weeks....that's somewhat normal for the first few months..but everyone's different--good luck! I basicly spot for a few days if I have a period at all....

I had some cramping for about three days after getting my IUD placed. They weren't any worse than the normal cramps I get when my period is starting. I took ibuprofen and it kept them under control fairly well. I took it easy on the day I had my appointment, and by that evening the cramping was already much lessened. The next day I felt pretty normal except for the occasional cramping.

I got my IUD just 3 days ago. I was pretty anxious, but it wasn't bad. She even gave me a shot in my cervix to numb a bit and that didn't even hurt, the medicine does make your heart race for a few minutes. My OB was great about talking me through what she was doing at each step. There was a small bit of cramping and a few moments that were uncomfortable, but it wasn't bad at all. I had my husband with me, but would have been fine on my own.

I was thinking I would be feeling back to normal by now, but still "tender" and crampy. From the other posts, it looks like it could be a few months before back to normal.

Good luck!
