i was on depo provera and i was supposed to get my shot on sept. 2nd but i didn't go back to get it cause i gained 10 pounds in 3 mnths i have extra unwanted body hair, and headaches, and really bad mood swings, since i have been off it i haven't rec'd my period yet and i know it can take months to get it again after getting off the depo, i want to start taking a bc pill but i am unsure of which one to take i never knew there were some many out there, does anyone have any suggestions on a good pill, and that doesn't cause weight gain, or mood swings, and one that is not expensive,( i don't have insurance), i am a very healthy 25 yr old female , but i do smoke, any suggestions?

I am walking in your shoes! Am do for a follow up depo in 2 wks and am desperately searching for a reliable method. I am a normally healthy 26 old with 4 kids and no insurance. Look into family planning/planned parenthood, etc for bc on sliding scales. Just a warning though, know your stuff before you go in, i havent had the best experiences with them. Have you ever looked into the nuva ring as an option. The placement is supposed to lower your overall hormone level and lessen those terrible headaches. Also only need to think of it every 3 wks! The IUD is a great choice but very pricey. Have so far found just reading posts are helping me make some decisions. Good Luck!

Hi Michelle,

If you are in a long term monogamous relationship you might want to consider an IUD. A Mirena http://www.mirena-us.com/ which continuously releases a tiny bit of progestin is very effective, low maintenance and effective for 5 years. The progestin will usually lighten periods and a method using no estrogen will reduce the likelihood of complications from your smoking. Just a thought…

If you specifically want pills, then I'd go for something with as low of a dose of hormones as possible. Alesse or Levlite might be good options, although everyone reacts differently to every pill. If you try something and have problems, the specific symptoms you have can give an idea of which pill might work better for you after the initial adjustment period of three months or so. I know you said the Nuva Ring isn't for you, but it seems like it has less side effects than pills do.
