orthotricyline lo and yeast infections

Hello all, new here at this board. I have a quick question for you all. I was put on the pill last October to regulate my periods after a disasterous hospital stay. I've stayed on it as protection because my fiance` and I are engaged and have sex as well as to make sure I stay regular. However the last couple of months I've had a yeast infection around the last week or two that I have active pills. (I eat yoguart everyday). I'm wondering if it could be the Orthotricyline lo that's causing it. Any info would be helpful.

Hi alisa1555, welcome to the Birth Control board!

I think combined hormonal contraceptives can contribute to YIs in some women. Whether that's what's going on in your case is hard to tell. Have you been diagnosed with a YI by a lab? Sometimes self diagnosis isn’t always correct. Have you changed anything in your diet about the time you began having the problem? I think in some cases partners can reinfect one another and I’ve recently seen an article that said a study showed that having oral sex seems to increase the incidence of YIs. Here is a link to information about YIs: http://www.ivillage.com/topics/health/0,,166053,00.html?arrivalSA=1&cobrandRef=0&arrival_freqCap=2 If I were you I’d talk to my doctor and see what s/he says. If you are on antifungals or antibiotics you should use back-up while you are on the medicine and for at least 7 days after the last dose as those medicines may reduce the effectiveness of your hormonal protection. Let us know how you’re doing, ok?

Good luck,

Hi Jill,

This month I went to the dr. to get diagnosed because I had unusual symptoms that I never had with yeast infections before. (I've had 2 or 3 in the past and got used to the 'classical' symptoms white cottage-cheese like discharge, itching etc.) She diagnosed a yeast infection and I took diflican. Nothing much in my diet has changed except I started eating yoguart with live cultures everyday since I had one last month. I really don't have oral sex much...haven't in the past 4-6 months actually. I guess if it happens again I'll just call the dr. back and see what she says then. Thanks,
Alisa

When I took Ortho Cyclen (same progestin) I was more yeasty in the last week of active pills. It was annoying, but never enough to consider an infection! That was the only pill I had that problem with. I've never had classical YI symptoms, so I always get them diagnosed, it usually presents as burning, not itching!

If this seems to be a pattern over the last several months, you might see if your doctor thinks a pill switch would be in order. Some women do have more problems with yeast on certain pills and not others so it could be that a different pill may be easier to cope with. And don't let them tell you that they're all the same! They're definitely not....that'd be like saying there's no difference between penicillin and cipro.

Good luck!

Thanks Judie,

Your info was helpful. This month it presented a yellowish discharge rather than the common white cottege cheese like discharge, but sure enough yeast. If it happens again I'll definatly give my dr. a call. Thanks!
