Could this be a problem???

I've been on the pill for a while and always take it on schedule like I'm supposed to. However when I try to skip my period it doesn't work. It isn't as bad as a full period, but it's definetly more than spotting. Could this mean that the pill I'm taking isn't as effective as it could/should be (scary thought!)? Or is my body just not receptive to skipping periods (or maybe it will work in the future)? Also would a different pill be more effective in skipping a period (I'm on Alesse)? Thanks!

Hi katiedid0985, welcome!

Some women can skip their periods successfully and others can't. Irregular bleeding when trying to skip is a common problem and usually doesn't mean your protection is less effective. If skipping is important to you, you might want to consider a pill switch. A different mix of hormones might be all you need. Be sure to stay on a monophasic pill (which is what Aleese is) as it's more difficult to skip on a triphasic pill. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

Good luck,

I've never been able to fully skip a period, just delay one. It has nothing to do with the ovulation control, just the bleeding control (two separate mechanisms)! Alesse might be tougher to skip with because the hormone doses are so low. Some women can do it, some women can't, it might be that you could on a different pill, but you'll have to decide if it's worth it to you to try something new in the hopes that it would be just as good for you and allow you to skip periods too.

Good luck!
