HELP!!!!

I have had unprotected sex with a man this morning. He is known to be very fertile and I am 36 YOA and have never been pregnant. I am not on the pill, but have been in the past. My question is do you think I'm at enough of a risk to need to get emergency contraception tomorrow morning or am I over-reacting? I will be going to gyno on Thursday and plan on getting on the pill then. But is that too long to wait? Thanks for your time.

You are not over reacting at all. If you had unprotected sex and do not wish to become pregnant, then you need to take emergency contraception as soon as possible. Your best chance at avoiding pregnancy is to take it right away. It works best within 72 hours, and may still work as late as 5 days after. Waiting until Thursday increases the chance that you will become pregnant.

Hi paulatx2004, welcome!

I agree with kellyann_25! You are not over reacting! You need to take emergency contraception as soon as possible. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

Good luck,

Shoot! I was afraid you guys would say that. How stupid am I?

Now the question is what do I do? What do you suggest is the emergency contraceptive I should use?

Here is a great site about emergency contraceptives:

http://ec.princeton.edu/

If you go to http://ec.princeton.edu/worldwide/default.asp and select your country, it lists the options open to you for EC. Of course, the clinic or doctor that you go to may not carry them all or may recommend a certain brand. 'Plan B' is a pill designed just for the purpose of emergency contraceptives and many of the others listed are regular birth control pills, taken in higher doses.

Hope this helps!

That will be up to your doctor but what seems to be most commonly prescribed in my area is Plan B. the Plan B site is: http://www.go2planb.com/ You might also want to look at the EC site: http://ec.princeton.edu/ They have a very good Q&A section. Keep in touch, ok?

Hugs,

You might be able to call your doctor's office in the morning and have them phone the prescription in to the pharmacy. If they won't call it in, or have a delay on when they can see you, then call your local Planned Parenthood. They should be able to help you very quickly.

My doctor FINALLY called in the prescription for me for Plan B. It wasn't ready by lunch time, but I got it after work. Just took the first pill.

Thanks again everyone for your input.

OK, that was on Monday, and today I start spotting. This is normal right?

Spotting is pretty normal after taking Plan B or Preven! It's a huge hormonal upheaval (that's the point), and that can cause some bleeding later on. You might want to be prepared for about anything, this could get heavier like a period or it could be a little spotting. Your next period will come whenever it feels like it, so don't freak out if it's later than it would normally have been--part of the function of Plan B is to disrupt ovulation, so you'd have to go through at least part of the ovulatory process again before you could have another period.

I hope that helps!
