Trouble breathing with NuvaRing

Hello,

I started NuvaRing a week ago (10/17). Two days after I inserted it for the first time, I started having a lot of trouble breathing. It got worse, so the next day I went to my regular physician, who gave me a breathing test. He diagnosed me with Asthma and gave me three different medications to take. I've been taking all three religiously and they don't seem to be helping. If anything, my breathing is getting worse. I've never had bad allergies and no one in my family has ever had Asthma (not that I even know if it's hereditary or not). My husband and I got a dehumidifier for the house, a bunch of air filters, and scrubbed the whole place down this weekend and it didn't help a bit.

Today I was researching Asthma and found that a change in hormones can trigger Asthma attacks in women. Then I went to the NuvaRing site, where it said to seek medical help if you have trouble breathing. Has anyone else ever had this side effect? I don't know if it's normal or something else entirely. It's getting scary not being able to breathe though, so I want to try taking it out. Is it okay to take it out after only two weeks?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks : )

The reason they suggest seeking medical attention if you have trouble breathing could be a possible blood clot in the lung. I suggest you call the dr that prescribed Nuvaring and tell them everything you posted here. I dont mean to scare you, but if your breathing isnt getting any better you really need to have this checked out. Let us know how you are doing, ok?

I agree with Josie! As soon as possible, please see the doctor who prescribed NuvaRing to see if your problem is hormone related. You can remove the ring. You will have your period, usually starting several days later. If you remove your ring be sure to use another effective method of contraception. I hope you’re feeling better soon. Keep us posted ok?

Good luck and hugs,

Thanks very much for the advice. I called my doctor and he said to take the ring out. He says he doubts that the ring is the reason I'm having asthma attacks, but that I need to take it out for a month and a half to be certain. He said if it is the ring, then I should start being able to breathe normally again by Thursday or Friday. I've got an appointment to follow up on the asthma with my regular physician next week.

Thanks for the help!!
