Yasmin or NuvaRing?

Here's my situation. I've been on ortho tri-cyclen lo for six months. I like that it has really lessened my cramps and gives me a relatively light period. I don't like the acne, the breast tenderness, and the mood swings (which seem to be getting worse--and seem to be worse during the second and third week of active pills).

I'm looking to try something else. I don't have much trouble remembering to take my pill on time, but even so, the ease of a method that only requires monthly maintenance is appealing. I think I should definitely try something that is monophasic and that has a different progestin than OTC-lo. I'm planning on calling my doc tomorrow (she's been out of the office) to talk to her about making a change, and I want to be prepared.

I've heard good things about Yasmin and NuvaRing. I was wondering if NuvaRing tends to help with cramps? (Mine were bad off the pill.) What about acne? (My skin was clear off the pill but is going crazy on OTC-lo.) Mood swings?

What about Yasmin on those same issues? Anyone try both?

I have tried OTC Lo... didn't like it. (bad cramps, breakouts)

I have tried Yasmin....didn't like it. (breast tenderness)

I am currently using the Nuva Ring... and I love it!

But everybody's different.

I haven't used the NuvaRing, but was on Yasmin for 4 months and got pregnant. My sil also got pregnant while on Yasmin. We love our new little ones, but were on birth control for a reason -- to have our next children when we PLANNNED for them, you know?! The doctors were "amazed" by our pregnancies and we both had dr's who were rather skeptical that we used the pills correctly. Funny how I used bcp's for 10 years with no pregnancies until I got on Yasmin, and what kind of coincidence is that for 2 people in the same family on the same brand of bcp?! I also had horrible mood swings on Yasmin, like PMS every day for the 4 months I was using it (poor DH). Then there was the horror of the 15-day run of breakthrough bleeding in my second month, even though I followed my doctor's advice to try both doubling the dosage and just stopping the pill for a week to have a period. My advice on Yasmin - just say NO!

I went through kind of the same thing you are. I got tired of having to take a pill every day. I tried the Depo-Provera shot - BIG MISTAKE! I gained 30 lbs. in my 2nd round of shots and felt sick to my stomach almost every day. I'm on the nuva-ring now and I absolutly love it!! Nothing to think about but once a month. I have had no side effects from it except that I have actually stopped having my period after being on it for a while. My doc says no period is fine, I just don't have that much lining on my uterus to shed. I would definatly recommend you give it a try.

Good luck!!! :)

Hi natalex7, welcome!

"Then there was the horror of the 15-day run of breakthrough bleeding in my second month, even though I followed my doctor's advice to try both doubling the dosage and just stopping the pill for a week to have a period."

How many active pills had you taken before taking a hormone free week? The 21/7 regimen was tested and approved to protect you for 7 hormone free days after taking 21 active pills consecutively and correctly. Thanks for posting.

Take care,

I take Yasmin and it has been great! I switched from OTC. No side effects whatsoever.
