IUD, no AF and strange symptoms

I have had my iud for 2 years, never had a problem and have always been on time w/ af. This month about a week ago I woke up a few nights in a row with sharp pain in my lower left pelvic area, it was like that all during the night, but as soon as I got up, it stopped. I have felt like af was on her way for about 4 days, but I have had nothing but blood tinged cm. Any advice, should I just wait it out or call the doc, I hate to call when it is probably nothing, but at the same time, I hate sitting around and worrying if there is something wrong with me. TIA

Hi jcovolo, welcome!

Can you feel your strings? If you can and AF is due and the pain is gone I might just wait it out, otherwise I'd call my doctor. But really, it never hurts to let your doctor know what's going on that's what s/he's there for. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

Good luck,

Yes, I can feel my strings, they are shorter thasn usual, but they tend to be shorter in the second half of my cycle. BTW, it is a paragard iud, not mirena. Thank you for your response! I will go ahead and wait it out unless some other strange thing comes up, just wanting to get af over with!

I had a similar situation a few months ago when I was late for the first time with my IUD that I've had in over a year.I went without a period for 10 weeks with "pregnancy" symptoms (throwing up,moodiness, slight abdominal pain)....But I made up for it and spotted for 16+ days.I did 2 pregnancy tests-both were negative. If you're concerned you could call your dr.I called mine and she said not to worry-as long as my strings were in everything should be OK....The mirena can cause some women to stop having regular periods.Lately mine have gone back to being 4-6 weeks apart and basicly just spotting (some days more heavy)....good luck!!!!

Thank you for your response, but I actually do not have the Mirena iud, it is the copper paragard iud. I have had very light spotting all day, and also been crampy, maybe af is on the way! Thank you again!!

I was just going to write a post like this.

This is only my 2nd month and 2nd period since I got my copper IUD... My 1st period was on time and normal (but quite a bit heavy for me) and then this month my period was 5 days late! Plus, so far my period has been very very light, basically spotting. But I have gotten a tiny bit crampy.

I was just curious if a copper IUD can affect my period like a mirena IUD or other hormonal BCs can?

I was off of hormones for about 5 months before getting the IUD and my period were normal (came when they were supposed and lasted the 'normal' length) all during that time..

I guess it could be my body still getting used to the copper and foreign object inside of it. No worries on my behalf though. I love my IUD!
