I think most doctors would want to do a pelvic or have done a recent one on you before prescribing hormonal contraceptives. The pill can be effective immediately if begun on the first day of your period. If you start on the Sunday after your period starts then it will be effective after 7 days of taking your pills correctly. The ring and patch require wearing for 7 days regardless of when you begin, before becoming effective. This board recommends using back-up for the entire first cycle as you are learning to use your method correctly. If you are new to hormonal contraceptives it would be a good idea to read the post ‘Taking your pills correctly’ in the FAQs. There is a lot of good information in it about things to do and to avoid doing, to get the most from your pills. Let us know what pill you choose and how you're doing, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
