Went for my consult last night.........

I asked my doctor about the IUD and she told me I wasn't a candidate for it. Because I am 28 and have no kids yet she wouldn't put me on it because IUD has been known to affect fertility. She said even if I could tell her that I 100% didn't want kids, she still wouldn't give it to me because I am still to young, she thinks, to really know for sure. I can honestly say that I don't want kids. However, my husband does and we have talked about it. He doesn't want them now, but thinks in the next 2 years we will be set to have them (a house, more financially secure, etc). I have just never wanted them but am willing to wait and see what the future holds so I can understand why she didn't put me on it.
Instead, I got the NuvaRing. I got 2 free samples. I am pretty anxious to try it and really hope it works for me. I have tried BC pills and the patch. I always forget to take my pills and the patch had some side effects that weren't worth it for me to stay on it. So I will give the Ring a shot and if doesn't work I may try Depo, but I am keeping my fingers crossed that it works. I know a lot of people have had good experiences on it so I am hoping to be one of those people also. Once I start it, I will let you know how it goes. Thanks for all of your help and info ladies!!!!

While modern IUDs are quite safe in the 1970s a poorly designed IUD, the Dalkon Shield, led to cases of infection, infertility, and several deaths. As a consequence in the U.S. the reputation of the IUD was severely tarnished and I don’t think it has fully recovered yet. Your doctor is practicing conservative medicine and you can’t fault her for that. If you only want to avoid for 2 or 3 years an IUD might not be the most cost effective method as the ones available in the U.S. are good for 5 or 10 years. If your insurance will pay for it and you really want an IUD you might consider finding a doctor who will insert one for you. A lot of members like NuvaRing but some have problems of one sort or another with it. As Kellyann said Depo can have some harsh side effects and return of fertility can take up to 18 months regardless of how long or short a period you are on it. Let us know how you like the ring, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
