yasmin and spotting

I started spotting in between my regular periods about 7 months ago so I went to the doctor 3 months ago and he prescribed yasmin for me to try and clear this up. I took it the first month with absolutely no spotting in between but for months 2 and 3, I did spot for about 2 1/2 weeks which is just too much for me to take:( I wanted to know what is the typical length of time when one could expect the yasmin to start working? I went to the doctor yesterday for a follow-up and described the situation and his solution was to switch me to seasonale, which in their own packet insert they admit that it may cause spotting and irregular bleeding, so I'm not going to switch. Any suggestions/info would be so appreciated. Thanks

Typically it can take 2-4 cycles for your body to adjust to the hormones in a particular pill. Even so, some women will continue to have irregular bleeding on some pills. Yasmin and Seasonale formulations are very different from each other as Yasmin uses a unique progestin. Seasonale has the same formulation of hormones that is in Nordette which has been around for years. The difference is in the regimen, Nordette is a 21/7 pill while Seasonale is 84/7. There is no doubt that, initially, irregular bleeding is far more common (for the first 3 extended cycles - 6 to 9 months) for women starting Seasonale than if they were on a 21/7 regimen pill. I think it has to do with the body adjusting continuous usage since after the first 3 extended cycles irregular bleeding on Seasonale is no more common than on a 21/7 pill. You could try Nordette (or any 21/7 pill) and see if it works better you. If you have no irregular bleeding after 3 cycles begin taking it continuously in increments, 2 packs consecutively and if that works then 3 packs and so on. Let us know what you decide, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
