Can you get an IUD before kids?

I was discussing birth control with some friends a few nights ago and one told me I cannot get the IUD without first having a child. I thought I could but it is less likely to be successful and more likely to be painful. Is the IUD a possibility for those without children?

It is possible, some women who haven't had children have success with an IUD. I did not. It lasted about four days before it came out in the shower. Good luck if you choose to try that method, it does work for some.

Yes you can have an IUD without having children. It may be slightly more likely to be expelled, although the risk is fairly low regardless. I've heard that it might be a little harder to insert, although in my case it was totally pain-free.

I've never had children, but my IUD was inserted 13 months ago. Everything went very well, I'm happy and protected against pregnancy.

Good luck!

I have had my IUD since April and love it. I don't have any children, my doctor said that was fine especially after I told her I didn't want any more hormones and I need something lower maintance than a barrier method. She told me I was more likely to expell it and it would be more painful to insert since the cervix had never been opened.

I love my IUD!
