Should I start my Birth Control?
| Tue, 11-09-2004 - 9:46pm |
I am 18 years old and my period is not at all regular. I got my period at the end of July and didnt get it again until the beginning of October. I am sexually active so this really can freak me out. I recently have gone to the OBGYN and got birth control. I told my doctor how irregular my period is and she told me that if it doesnt come when it's suppose to, take a pregnancy test, and if it's negative, start the birth control the next sunday. I was suppose to get my period last friday (11/5) but I did not get it. I took a pregnancy test today (11/9) and it was negative. Should I wait longer for my period to show up, or should I go ahead and start it this Sunday Because who knows when my period will show up again and I would like to go ahead and get on birth control. Also, If I do start my birth control this Sunday and my period shows up before its suppose to (when on the pill), what does that mean? Will my period eventually regulate to the way the pill makes it? I just dont want to be taking the pill and in the middle of the cycle, my period show up... I wasnt sure if the pill would hold off my period until it makes it come. Thanks

I think if I were you and wanted to start my pills on Sunday I'd test with first urine Sunday morning to be as certain as possible where I was and if the test is neg. then start my pills. If you are far enough along in the ovulation process so that your pills can't suppress ovulation this time then you will get your period in about 2 weeks after ov, regardless of where you are in your pack. If your period or just irregular bleeding occurs keep on taking your pills, all 21 actives then the placebos and then start the next pack on time. It will take about 3 cycles for your body to adjust to the hormones in your pills. Since you're new to BCPs you might want to read the posts in the FAQs about how to take your pills correctly, common pill side effects and irregular bleeding while on the pill.
Your pills will regulate your cycle but they won't do anything to correct the underlying problem that is making your natural cycles so irregular. I think you can expect that when you stop hormonal contraceptives your irregular natural cycles will return. Let us know what you decide and how you're doing, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
