Tried to skip my period

I started taking OvCon35 (first time on the pill) back in October. Well, I skipped my inactive pills and went straight into my next pack around Nov 1 in an attempt to delay my period this month. But I'm not sure if that worked. Since monday, I have had this brownish discharge. But today, I have normal bleeding that is red, but surely not as heavy as I am used to. I want to know if this is spotting, or breakthrough bleeding, or did I just delay my period by a week and a half? also could missing my pill dosage by about 6-7 hrs on Saturday night have caused the brownish discharge or failed my attempt to skip my period? Sorry so long, very new at this. any info would help! Thanks

Hi there!

What you are experiencing is called break-through-bleeding, and it's caused when there are not enough hormones in your body to prevent the lining of the uterus from breaking down. It happens fairly often when people try to push back their periods, sometimes it happens to people even during the regular course of the month (when I was on Ovcon, I always had BTB from day 14 right up until I got my period). It is impossible to say for sure whether missing one pill could have caused this, but it is a possibility: some people are just sensitive to hormone fluctuations - I know I am. Or perhaps you just are one of those people, like me, who can't push back their period without experiencing BTB at some point.

Many people do attempt to delay their periods by skipping their inactive pills and going straight to their next pack. Ovcon-35 is a good one to do this with, since it is a monophasic pill (same amount of hormones all month). However, I am not sure whether it was wise to attempt to skip your period so soon after starting your pills. How many periods have you had since you started? It sounds like you went on the pills, had one period, and then attempted to push back your second one. You might want to give your body a little more time to get used to the hormones before you try to skip a period.

Of course if you're concered, you can always give your doctor a call!

Hope this helps,

Caitlin
