IUD questions

Ok, I'm new here but I came here to see what other people were saying about iuds before I decided to get one. Well, had a paraguard copper iud inserted yesterday. I can't say that it was a fun experience; I cramped up quite a bit and I had to lay down for about half an hour afterward to keep from passing out. However, an hour or so after I finally got home I hardly had any cramping at all. Now today... I've had some cramping but not much and I've also had a few sharper pains in that general area. I'm 20 years old and have never had children. I was just wondering if you guys who have or had iuds can share your experiences and let me know if this is normal or not. Thanks so much!!

Some cramping is normal. I got a Mirena IUD a few months back and I had some cramping too. I took ibuprofen for about three days, which really helped a lot. After three days, everything was totally normal again. You might have some spotting for a few days as well, especially if you were on your period when you went for the insertion.

Hey! I was in your exact situation 13 months ago! I was 20 and had never had children when I got my Copper IUD inserted. I agree with you that the insertion was no picnic, but trust me, it will get better. Most women do really well on the IUD; yes, our chances of expulsion are *slightly* higher because we have not had children, but those chances become even more minimal after the first three months are over.

I had some slight cramping and the occasional pain in that region, just like you said. I'm sure it's all normal. A good rule of thumb is that if anything ever just doesnt feel right, trust your gut and see a Doctor. Good luck and feel free to email me through my profile if you ever want to chat more about the IUD!

Hi Silmarilia,

I just got my copper-IUD 2 months ago. I am loving it! Your experience sounds quite a bit like mine did. Although, I didn't feel like passing out right afterwards.. I was sitting up and ready to go.. The doctor was asking if I was ok and how I felt.. heheh.

The insertion wasn't any fun.. I did have cramps right afterwards and the rest of that evening. But I was out mushroom picking in the forest the next day with out any problems. But I did take some advil/ibueprofen just in case. And ever since then I have only gotten little twinges of cramps sometimes.

My periods haven't been that much different. I still have a tiny bit of cramps the first day or so, but they haven't gotten worse. I have much much heavier bleeding the first 3 or so days, then it tapers off a lot for the rest of the 3 days. I've always been a 6-7 day length-period-girl.

The only thing I miss is the hormones from birth control pills keeping my face (almost) zit-free and tons less oily. I am now trying to find stuff that will make my face a bit more normal again. UGH!

Best of luck with the IUD.

(ps. What does your screen name mean?)

sounds somewhat normal.I had cramps that came and went for the first few months after getting the IUD....they weren't constant but came and went away and maybe a few weeks later came back....mega doses of ibuprofen helped.... 600mg/6hours but ask your dr first....
