pregnant if spotting?

hi everyone,

can someone reassure me that the bc pill does work! I've been on the pill for a year now, currently on OTC for the last 8 months. I haven't had very many spotting issues before with this particular pill. This morning I went to the bathroom and noticed some spotting. I am on Day 15 of my pills so technicially my period is a week away? What's going on?

What can cause spotting... what things can your body react to?

Thanks

Hi magicalbird, welcome!

Some things that can cause irregular bleeding are: not taking your pills on time, dieting and loosing weight. (Burning fat releases a bit of estrogen which could cause enough of a hormone imbalance to cause bleeding.) Taking large amounts (1,000mg or more) of vitamin C can cause bleeding in some women. Did you begin taking any medicines or supplements about the time the bleeding began? Or, it might be that your body chemistry has changed enough that OTC isn't keeping your endometrium stable any longer. For more on hormonal contraceptives and irregular bleeding see the post 'Irregular bleeding anyone?' in the FAQs. Bleeding is not usually a sign of pregnancy so you are probably ok there. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

Good luck,

The pill works....I've been using either the pill or Nuvaring for the last 8 years with no other backup unless required and my fiance and I still don't have any kids!'

Spotting can be very common, and sometimes it's just an indication that you need a pill change. No biggie! If you haven't missed any pills this month, you might call your doctor and see if s/he wants to wait another month (sometimes it's an isolated incident) or switch with your next cycle.

Good luck!
