mood swings on pill

I recently changed to a new pill (i don't have it on me, but it starts with an M) that contains estrogen to help my migraines aroiund perios time. However, it effected my mood so bad, that I flipped out at work and walked out on my job. Now I feel like an idiot. Is there any literature I can take or find that can prove that my new pills are making me into a crazed psycho?

Also, should I stop these pills now, or wait until the end of the month. I missed a couple because i was so frustrated with my mood, and I'm bleeding (my fault), so would there be any harm in starting a different pack now?

Hi katiehelton, welcome back!

Hon, I'm sorry you are having problems with your new pill. I don't know about 'proving' that your pills are causing your mood swings but the patient information that comes with your pills should have a list of common side effects thought to be from hormonal contraceptives that might be what you are looking for. You might also want to read the post 'Common pill side effects' in the FAQs.

It usually takes about 3 cycles for your body to adjust to the hormones in a new pill or different method. Since you have missed several pills be sure to use another effective method of contraception until your hormonal protection is reestablished by taking your active pills correctly for at least 7 consecutive days. If you want to continue with the pill you are currently on then I think if I were you I would start a new pack and save the partial pack for spares. You might want to talk with your doctor and see what s/he recommends. I hope you are feeling better soon. Please let us know how you’re doing.

Good luck and hugs,

      Jill

If your pills are affecting you so badly that you can't function, then yes stop them immediately, and be sure to talk to your doctor ASAP. If you start back on your old pills, then you'll need backup until you've been on them for seven consecutive days.

Migraines can be caused or aggravated if you're using birth control methods that have estrogen. You might want to look into doing something different like an IUD or the mini pill if your headaches continue. One thing though, if you've had mood problems with birth control, do not try Depo Provera. It can cause problems, and if you had them, you'd be stuck with the side effects for a very long time until the shot wears off.
