Switched to Generic

Hello!

I have been on OTC for 5 years, with basically no issues. This month I had to switch to Tri Sprintec bc of insurance issues. I abstained the first week and a half or so, and finally had sex on about day 16 of my cycle (w/condom) I started to spot about a day and a half after, very very faintly (only when i wiped, and not even every time) and it ended after about 2 days. I have been feeling bloated and crampy, and even though I keep telling myself its probably just the pill switch, I cant help but being paranoid. Has anyone else had these problems when switching from regular otc to generic? any input would be great bc Im beginning to work myself into a panic!
Thanks so much!

Hi There,

I used to work in a pharmacy for 7 years and it was my understanding that generics and brand names 'legally' have to contain the same active ingredients, which means a break between wouldn't even be required. (Of course always do whatever your dr. recommends)

But I'd think if you took all of your pills uninterrupted, you should be good.

I've been on Ortho Cyclen for 8 years and often switch among 2 other generics (whatever the pharmacy has) with no troubles...

Hopefully someone else can elaborate too!

Good luck!

On behalf of my daughter who takes the pill because of irregularity, we have heard from two docs (in two states) that even though generics are equivilent, there are some people who respond differently on one vs. the other. My daughter does have less btb and acne when taking name brand Ortho Cyclyn rather than generic...my suspicion is it is about the "inactive" ingredients and/or absorbtion issues...just my hypothisis:)

Hi curly55, welcome!

It's quite common for some women to experience side effects when switching between a brand and it’s generic. Any side effects should disappear within 2 or 3 cycles. Let us know how you're doing...

Good luck,
