vomiting after taking BCP

First of all, let me say how great I think this discussion board is. I refer to it on a regular basis. I think it's really comforting to know that someone else out there is going through the same thing you are, know what I mean? So, I need a little reassurance again. On Saturday night, I took my BCP around 830pm (my usual time) and then got really sick and threw up (a lot!) around midnight. It didn't occur to me until today that that might be a problem (I was on Depo for so long and only started taking the pill again this year so I don't think about stuff like that). I only recently got into another relationship and this is the first time in years that I had to depend on the pill for birth control. I take it every day-ALL THE TIME-so that's not a problem. Should I be worried? Also, does anyone else worry about getting pregnant a lot? It just really freaks me out. I feel like there's so much that can go wrong even though I take my pill exactly like I should and I don't have any side effects. Believe me, if it wasn't for the 30 pound weight gain, I'd still be on the Depo.

Also, Saturday was the end of my first pack of a new brand of BCP. There was no gap between me stopping the other one and starting the new one.

Any thoughts?

And while I'm on the subject, what are your thoughts on spermicide? I'm wondering if I employed another method (besides condoms-we've both been tested), if I'd feel better and not worry so much about getting pregnant.

Thanks, guys!

Hello there! Two hours is typically the window for whether vomiting is a bad thing or a really bad thing. It can depend on other factors like whether you had other food in your stomach, but typically it's thought that the pill would be dissolved and out of your stomach and into your small intestine where it would be absorbed in two hours. If it makes you feel more comfortable, you can use backup until you get to seven days since that episode, but you don't really have to.

Spermicides are 85% effective (ish) when they're used all by themselves. I have used spermicide alone as backup for antibiotics, but that's too much risk for some people! If you're not totally comfortable using the pill all by itself, maybe it would make you feel better to have a method that you can "see" working so that it didn't feel so much like blind faith. They can be goopy and a little messy.

You didn't mention anything about condoms, you and your partner have both been tested for STD's, right? If you haven't, now's the time! Spermicides can cause tiny perforations in the vaginal epithelium (the "skin"), so women at risk for contracting STD's can be increasing their risk with heavy use of spermicides.

Good luck! I hope everything works out okay... After almost 8 years on the pill, I don't worry about pregnancy anymore. If it happens, I'll deal with it, but at this point in my life, I'm not going to waste time worrying about what's ultimately out of my control!
