Getting my IUD...Anything I should know?
| Tue, 11-16-2004 - 3:09pm |
After taking BCP for 3 yrs and losing my libido, I'lm getting an IUD this Saturday. I'm nervous, but excited. ( not the sexual kind, but I hope when I stop taking the pill I'll be-lol)
I'm getting the Paraguard and never had kids.
I wanna know from ladies who got an IUD..any tips? Anything I should know?
I also wanna know if the string is hard, if it's soft or if it gets soft over time ...
....just tell me anything and everything! :-)
Thank you! :-)
Mayra.

I got my copper IUD just over 2 months ago. I took some ibuprofen just before going in and getting it inserted. Relax as much as you can, I know it is kind of hard, but it will help.
I put a heating pad on my tummy for rest of the day because I did have semi-strong cramps all the rest of that day (I got it at 2pm).
The next day I was totally fine. But I took one more ibuprofen just in case.
I wish you the best of luck and definitely post more if you have questions.
What about the strings. Are they hard?
Hi mafedeso!
I got my copper IUD about seven months ago. I also haven't had children, but I wanted to get a long-term, non-hormonal method..and this was it.
The insertion was slightly painful (it's usually more-so for those of us who haven't given birth) but any pain I did experience was over within seconds. I had light spotting for about a week or two afterwards, and a bit of cramping. But nothing major at all. My first few periods afterwards were a bit off..but now my body is completely used to it and back to it's normal self (libido and all).
As for the strings, it's hard to say, for me they are soft and my partner has never been able to feel them. But some women say that their men can feel them. I guess it depends on each individual. Usually they will leave the strings long though, so that there will be no chance of poking.
Hope this information was helpful, good luck!

Hi Mayra,
I got the paraguard about 3 weeks ago. I have had 6 kids and maybe because of that I felt the insertion was almost painless. I had taken 400mg Ibuprofen before going, but never took anything else after that...a bit of an off and on achy feel, but nothing worse than that. I had a tiny bit of pink spotting, for a couple days...but nothing since.
I have been a bit over interested in the strings I think. I was not real secure in the idea of finding them at first. Then felt a bit "concerned" when they got into a little loop by my cervix after a night of IC. Initially they were tucked "up" behind my cervix...then they got in that loopy thing for a couple days...then they were in a little circle in the indentation of my cervix...now they are basically back like at first. The nurse let me touch the pieces they trimmed off. They are like most have said kind of like fishing line. I do not believe they get soft at all...at least not the ones on a Paraguard.
Overall, I am thrilled with it (but I haven't had my first period yet!) Yes, the libido definately is better...
Best wishes,
Sandy
But some people say their guy doesn't feel it at all and have no problems. It really just depends on the couple.
I don't think the "strings" are actually stringy.. I think they are actually wires or like someone else said fishing line type material. I'll ask my doctor when I see him.
Hi!
I've had my Cooper IUD for about six weeks. I was very nervous about insertion, but it really wasn't that bad. I also took advil prior to my appointment. I was a little wiped out after insertion, but I think it was being so nervous. My Dr. let me feel the strings before she inserted the IUD. She said it was like dental floss and when they get wet, they soften up. My DH says he does not feel them.
Good luck!
Thank you for all the info.
Mayra.
Please let me know how your IUD insertion goes, I am seriously considering one too. I too have never had children. I am just afraid it there is alot of pain involved, I am okay with cramping pain, but cannot handle sharp pains, such as those associated with a cut. Please share your experience. Thanks!!!
