Spotting?
| Wed, 11-17-2004 - 12:45am |
I've been on Estrostep for almost a year, and in the summer I started spotting about halfway through my pack, which turned into my period that lasted a week and a half... I called my gyno and she told me that it could be related to stress/anxiety/a stomach virus I had, etc. and told me that she wanted to wait to see if it happened again before switching my birth control. Everything went back to normal (I ended up getting my period again on time that month) and I was fine until about 3 weeks ago. I was on my 3rd week of my pack, but I started spotting and it got heavier throughout the week (which I assumed meant that it turned into my period). It stayed from Mon-Sun... then on the Sun night I had sex, and I started getting my period again right then and there (really embarrassing and disgusting) and it stayed for about 3-4 days... Now 2 weeks later I am only on the 2nd week of my new pack and I started spotting again yesterday. 4 weeks ago I started taking diet pills, and I wanted to know if maybe they had anything to do with this, or if you think I just need to change my birth control. I really don't want to switch, because I hadn't had any major problems with this one, and also because I'm afraid of the weight gain if I try another pill-but at the same time I don't want to go home for Thanksgiving break and see my guy,and then get my period on him again like I did last time-it was very embarrassing!! I'm not sure if I should stop taking the diet pills, because I don't know if this spotting is because of them, or if I just need to change my birth control. If anyone has any opinions on this please help!! Thanks!

Hi shnorkels, welcome!
If I were you I'd ditch the diet pills. This board recommends not taking diet pills and using caution and back-up if you do. Most diet pills haven't been approved for effectiveness or drug interactions by the FDA so no one knows for sure what effect they may have when used with oral contraceptives. It's possible that if the diet pills have increased your metabolism to burn fat your body may not be fully absorbing the hormones from your pills which would lower your protection. If I were you I'd be using back-up until you are off the diet pills and have taken at least 7 active BCPs correctly. Let us know how you're doing, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
I totally agree with Jill. If the pills say anything about "fat blocker" or "carb blocker" then you'd have to wonder what else they're blocking! And in reality, diet pills don't work. Not a single one has actually been proven to provide long-term results, the only safe, effective, and long-term (cheap too!) way to lose weight is through a healthy diet and exercise. Diet pills fall in that "if it seem too good to be true..." category.
Good luck!
