Yasmin - Help!
| Wed, 11-17-2004 - 10:10am |
Hi I've switched to Yasmin for a week, and over the week I've had trouble sleeping three or four of the nights. Has anybody else had similar problem before? I haven't been able to get in touch with my doctor, so what shall I do now? I want to stop taking it, can I?

Troube sleeping isn`t generally a problem attributed to birth control. Have you been under a lot of stress lately? Something on your mind? Your bedroom been unusually hot or cold? These things can contribute to sleeplessness.
However, hormonal birth control does affect different women in different ways, so I suppose anything`s possible. Only being on it a week isn`t long enough for your body to adjust to the hormones and for you to get a good idea of how Yasmin is going to work for you...usually, that takes about 3 months for your body to get used to the new coctail of synthetic hormones.
You could stop at any time, I suppose, but it`s generally recommended that you, 1) TALK to your doctor first! 2) At least finish out this month. You have one week down, two weeks to go. If you stop now, you`ll have your period and it may not be very pleasant. and 3) You`ll lose your protection against pregnancy if you stop now.
But definitely wait to talk to your doctor before you stop taking it. He or she can advise you of the best way to go about this, whether he recommends sticking it out for a cycle or two or switching you to another brand after this cycle.
Dear friend,
Thanks for the advice! You really calmed me down. I wouldn't usually attribute sleeplessness to birth control pill, either, only because it is weird that for 3 or 4 nights during my first week of Yasmin, I was staring at the ceiling so awake and alert, which eventually made me wonder why.
Anyway, I will take your advice.
I just started Yasmin about a week and a half ago. I haven't had any trouble sleeping. (So far, all I've noticed is that my skin seems less oily than it did on ortho tri-cyclen lo.)
There are lots of factors that can contribute to insomnia and troubled sleep (I've had my share of it, though none that I could attribute to bcp). You might try avoiding caffiene (if you generally consume it), exercise regularly (but not in the two hours before bedtime), and try some relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing before bedtime. If it doesn't get better, talk to your doctor. I hope you start sleeping better soon!
Hi,
Have you been drinking a lot of tea/coffee/soda before bed? Caffeine intake will have an effect on sleep.
Best wishes,
Sarah:)
Hi zyl41,
If you are a young, healthy nonsmoker and have no family history of medical problems that might be triggered by the hormones then there is very little likelihood of having serious side effects from hormonal contraceptives.
Good luck,
Jill
I'm not on Yasmin, but I'm on a high dose of spironolactone.
