I have never had any children and would like to switch to an IUD, but the process scares me to death. I just want to hear what your insertion experiences were, what kind of pain do you feel??? Cramps or sharp pain like someone cut you?? Thanks so much for sharing.

Although I don`t have an IUD, here are just a few of the threads on this site that relate to IUDs, insertion, etc.:

I think it`d really be worth your time to check them out, especially the second one. They have a lot of information about IUDs.

It`d also be helpful to check out the websites for the two types of IUDs:

http://www.paragard.com - Paragard, the non-hormonal IUD
http://www.mirena.com - Mirena, the hormonal IUD

It seems that most women experience cramping, not unlike period cramps, during insertion. But popping a few ibuprofen the day of and maybe one the day after definitely help out. After a few hours, most women feel much better and the day after, are back to normal.

Hey!

I've never had children either, and I switched from the Pill to a Copper IUD 14 months ago.

My insertion wasn't exactly pleasant, but if I had to, I would do it all over again to be as happy with and protected by my IUD. The whole thing took about 5-6 minutes (and he even did a pap for me at the same time!). For me, I felt the pain just like a bit of a poke/prick in my cervix. Nothing horrible, just discomfort. Remember that you can always do yourself a favour and take a couple ibuprofen before you head into your appt.

Good luck with your decision!

Hi there!

clannanceilidh gave you the link to my IUD insertion experience (the 2nd link). If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

It has now been just over 2 months and I am loving my IUD! No worries about remembering to take anything and well, just no worries.

My period is basically the same as it was before. I have always been quite regular and never much pain or cramps. My period is a lot heavier the first 3, but after that it slows down to almost nothing for the remaining 3 or so days.
