Two-week long period on the Pill

Hi everyone, I'm new to the boards but decided to post a thread after all because I am frankly quite disturbed to the way my body's been reacting to the pill.

My doctor precribed Melaine to me, as it's apparently a low dosage pill, and I've been on it for about two and a half weeks, every since the first day of my period on 2 November. However, my period (which usually lasts about 5 days) did not end till 17 November. I called my doctor to ask him why and he said that my body is probably just adjusting to the pill.

However, thinking that my period had ended for the month, I stopped wearing tampons. Yet today, 20 of November, I woke up in the morning to find my underwear soaked with blood. It was mostly brown blood but there was a bit of fresh blood as well. I've inserted a tampon and it's as though my period has started again. The flow is pretty heavy. I couldn't reach my doctor today...

Is this a common thing to happen? I did have unprotected sex with my boyfriend only once, towards the end of my period on 17 November. I hope I'm not having two periods within a month. Thanks everyone, for taking the time to read this. I would greatly appreciate any advice!

Hi peaberry20, welcome!

Meliane, is a monophasic pill which has 75mcg Gestodene and 20mcg EE in each active pill. It is available in Europe and Asia but not yet in the U.S.

Irregular bleeding is very common side effect during the first 2-4 cycles when beginning or switching hormonal contraceptives. It usually takes that long for your body to adjust to the new hormones in your pill. If you have been taking your pills correctly you should be well protected from pregnancy but stabilizing your endometrium may take a few weeks. Since you are new to the board you might want to read some of the posts in the FAQs: 'taking your pills correctly', 'common pill side effects' and 'irregular bleeding anyone?' For more on Gestodene see:

Gestodene compared to other progestins http://www.contraceptiononline.org/slides/slide01.cfm?q=gestodene

I know the bleeding is annoying but it sounds like it might be pretty normal to me. You might want to touch base with your doctor and see what s/he says. Thanks for posting. Let us know how you're doing, ok?

Good luck,

sounds like your body just need some time to adjust to the new pill. It took me about 3-4 months to adjust to a new pill. Give it some time and if the symptoms continue, talk to your doctor and maybe he/she can prescribe you a new pill.
