Stopped depo need advice
| Wed, 03-15-2006 - 12:17pm |
I started taking depo in January of 2004 after my son was born. I decided to stop taking it in November because I was having leg cramps and weight gain. I have a thyroid disease that doesn't seem to be getting better. Doctor said that the shot could be causing my thyroid to not function right. So I stopped taking it in November 2005. And just this last week I started bleeding heavy, my back feels like it is going to snap, and my head is going to split. And I know this probably sounds gross but all of this has brought on terrible smelling gas and is keeping in the bathroom more. Does any one know if this is normal after stopping the shot? Or how long it is going to take for these symptoms to go away? Thank you for you help.

Hi countryatheart24, welcome!
Depo-Provera can stay in your system for months after stopping the injections and return of fertility can take anywhere from a few weeks to more than 18 months. If I were you I would see what my doctor recommends to ease your discomfort and bleeding. You might want to consider going on BCPs to ease yourself back into having estrogen in your body and reduce your PM symptoms.
Thanks for posting. I'm sorry you are having such a rough time. I hope you are feeling better soon. Let us know what you and your doctor decide, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
That doesn't seem right, about the lining of the uterus building up while you are on Depo. I'm pretty sure Depo stops that from happening, and that's why you don't get a period. I was on it for five years, and it seems like if I was building up the lining that whole time, going off of it could have caused me to bleed to death.
Are you sure that's what your doctor was telling you? That just seems really wrong.
Hi! I just found this board! I, too, went off Depo in August 2005.
Hi dubisbaby, welcome!
>>What my doctor told me is that the lining in the uterus does not build up, which is why not having your period is safe on Depo (she said it does build up if you don't get your period on the pill)<<
I totally agree! Coming off Depo it can take some women as long as 18 months - and sometimes longer - to begin cycling naturally and regularly again. I hope your cycles stabilize soon.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Keep in touch and let us know how you're doing, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
I took Depo too. I wanted to take the next form of near permanent birth control. So I chose to have the Mirena IUD placed in 2004. I have four great children ages 15, 13, 10, and 8. I turned 41 when I got the IUD. This IUD has been great for me. The Mirena IUD needs to be replaced every 5 years. It's the plastic IUD, not the Copper IUD. The Copper IUD stays place for 10 years. My doc tried to talk me into getting the Copper IUD. I told him no, I did not like having periods and I wanted to keep from that as long as I could. I do not mind going through the procedure again in 3 years. Yes, it hurt somewhat getting the IUD placed. There was minor cramping and light bleeding a few days afterwards.
Good luck.
