Canada Q: IUD b4 pregnancy?
| Sat, 03-18-2006 - 7:40pm |
Hi everyone,
I am 27 and with a steady partner of 3 years and I've had no children but plan to have some in the future.
I have been on the pill (various types, now I'm on marvelon) for 6+ years and I think I'd just like to get off it. I have spotted every other month, and it's annoying! Plus, I don't like the idea of all those hormones in me anymore.
Can I get an IUD now? I know in the past they said women shouldn't but there is a new one out approved for use before kids? Is it availabe in Canada? I am in the Toronto/GTA area.
Thanks for your input!

Hi goddess_musclegirl, welcome!
The NOVA-T and Mirena IUDs are available in Canada. The NOVA-T is non-hormonal with copper as its active element and is effective for 2 1/2 years. The Mirena continuously releases a tiny amount of progestin and is effective for 5 years.
In the U.S. IUDs are increasingly being inserted for childless women and the ParaGard (a 10 year copper IUD) has been approved for use by childless women by the FDA. There is a slightly higher expulsion rate when used by women who haven't given birth and women with multiple sexual partners are at greater risk of pelvic infection.
You should discuss the IUD with your doctor who can determine if you are a good candidate for one. You should try to find a doctor who has a lot of experience in inserting IUDs so there is less likelihood of complications after insertion.
Thanks for stopping by. If you have more questions please ask. Let us know what your doctor says and how you're doing, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
Hi goddess_musclegirl
I am also 27 and had an IUD (mirina) inserted this past November. It is wonderful! I had it inserted the last day of my period, It did hurt alot but I could deal with the pain. The doctor said it would hurt a bit more for someone like me who has never had any kids. I did have some light spotting for a couple days in two months but I havn't had a period since that time. It was expensive $400.00 but considering I don't have to buy pills or tampons for atleast 5 years, it works out to be very inexpensive. Pluss it can be removed at any time if you decide to have children and you don't have to wait for hormone to leave your system.
I also live in Ontario about two hours North of Toronto. Let us know what you plan on!
