Does anyone know anything about this type of bc. I saw it mentioned in an article on ivillage. It is an injectable given every 8 weeks. I googled it but could not find much on it. I'm not sure it's even available in the U.S. Thanks.

Hi Tanya, welcome!
Noristerat is available in the UK see: http://www.netdoctor.co.uk/medicines/100001874.html I searched MedlinePlus, the USFDA and Health Canada sites and got no hits. Nor is Noristerat mentioned in the 18th Ed. (2004) of Contraceptive Technology so it doesn’t seem to be available in the U.S. or Canada, at least not under that name. PubMed http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?CMD=search&DB=pubmed did mention it in relation to European contraceptive injection options. The UK article about Noristerat says:
“This contraceptive injection contains the active ingredient norethisterone oenanthate, which is a synthetic progestogen, similar to the natural progestogens produced by the body.
The injection is called a depot contraceptive and is given into the buttock. The norethisterone is released slowly from the depot into the bloodstream to provide contraception for eight weeks. The injection is given in the first five days of the menstrual cycle (first day of period is day one), or immediately after abortion or delivery. It is effective straight away, ie no extra contraception is needed.”
Thanks for posting. If you have more questions, please ask.
Take care,
Jill
