Ideally, you should wait until you know you are having your period or take a pregnancy test to be sure you aren't pg before starting hormonal contraceptives. However, under the circumstances, because your periods have been light and erratic, I think you probably did the right thing. If AF doesn't arrive at the end of the first pack you could test to see where you are. I don't think there is any meaningful evidence that taking BCPs during early pregnancy will harm the fetus and you could stop right away if you did test positive.
