Getting Copper IUD next week- nervous!
| Wed, 03-22-2006 - 10:51am |
I am taking 2 days off from work, just in case I need it. I am nervous of 1. the pain, 2. I have a very long road trip coming up next month, and scared of bleeding. 3. pain!!! 4. my best friend had to get hers removed b/c she had problems.
anybody have the copper one- experience, advice, what I should look out for?
please settle my nerves! Thanks ladies :)

I was very anxious before my insertion also, but relax about it- it will be much easier that way. There will be a little bit of pain, but rest assured that it only lasts a few minutes. I have never heard of anyone being in pain after the actual insertion was completed. I had a few cramps afterwards but could have definitely gone right back to work, in fact I did - I am a SAHM. I didn't feel like I needed to lay down and rest at all.
The best thing to do is get good information from a doctor you feel confident in and just relax and enjoy your newfound freedom! It is a wonderful birth control and by far the easiest thing going. I just had mine removed b/c I had anxiety about it but my doctor assured me that it was just perfectly fine and I was good to go. I am really conflicted about it but be sure that other than my own nerves I LOVED it.
Good luck!

Hi there I got the copper IUD inserted 4 weeks ago. I now have my first period since getting it inserted. The insertion for me was painful, but lasted only a minute or two. I had a few cramps afterward, but nothing major. I was on my period when I had it inserted so I finished the bleeding from that the day after my insertion and have had no bleeding or pain since the insertion. I was nervous about my first period but so far it is nothing like what I expected. The bleeding is a little heavier than my periods with the pill, which I expected, and the cramps have been a little worse, but nothing I can't handle, haven't even taken a Tylenol. I would advise you to take 800 mg. of ibuprofen about an hour before getting the IUD, but other than that you should be fine. I went by myself and drove myself home, didn't really need any down time. I love my IUD. I like the previous poster wish I would have gotten it a long time ago. The pain of getting it put in is worth saying I don't have to worry about birth control until 2016. Good Luck let us know how it goes.

I had the Paragard IUD inserted last August. I was on vacation at the time, so I didn't have to go into work the next day. But, I would have been able to without a problem. Insertion was very, very briefly painful, but then it was over. I really had no cramps. I bled a bit for a few days afterwards, but when I told my dr. I had been working out, I was told to not do that for a month. I was able to walk for exercise. While I'm used to a more vigorous work out, it was fine for the time.
My periods have been regular and not particularly heavy (at least nothing that requires any pain reliever) since insertion.
I love it! I enjoy the freedom and the fact that I don't have to think about it.
I was told to use a condom for the first month (to minimize chance of infection) and my dr. put me on antibiotics for a week after insertion. Also, I was instructed not to use a tampon for the first two cycles. But, after I got past all that, I've had no restrictions.
Good Luck!
