Is this true? IUD Question

I read this on a different message board.

"If you become pregnant whith an IUD in place, the child will normally need to be aborted, because the risk to mother and child is to great to let the pregnancy continue."

I was considering an IUD...but there is no way if this is true! And if it isn't true...what would make someone think that?

Thanks!

While there is a chance of an unintended pregnancy while using an IUD it is very slight and is less than if you had had a TL, but the possibility is not zero. For a comparison of method effectiveness see: Summary Table of Contraceptive Efficacy http://www.contraceptivetechnology.org/table.html. However, if there is an unintended pregnancy an IUD does complicate things. This is what the Mirena Patient Information at: http://berlex.com/html/products/pi/mirena_patient_insert.pdf says about a pregnancy with their IUD inserted:

“What if I become pregnant while using MIRENA®?
Call your health care provider right away if you think you are pregnant. If you get pregnant while using MIRENA®, you may have an ectopic pregnancy. This means that the pregnancy is not in the uterus. Unusual vaginal bleeding or abdominal pain may be a sign of ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is an emergency that often requires surgery. Ectopic pregnancy can cause internal bleeding, infertility, and even death. Do not use MIRENA® if you have had an ectopic pregnancy in the past or you are at high risk for ectopic pregnancy.

There are also risks if you get pregnant while using MIRENA® and the pregnancy is in the uterus. Severe infection, miscarriage, premature delivery, and even death can occur with pregnancies that continue with an intrauterine device. Because of this, your health care provider may try to remove MIRENA®, even though removing it may cause a miscarriage. If MIRENA® cannot be removed, talk with your health care provider about the benefits and risks of continuing the pregnancy. If you continue your pregnancy, see your health care provider regularly. Call your health care provider right away if you get flu-like symptoms, fever, chills, cramping, pain, bleeding, vaginal discharge, or fluid leaking from your vagina. These may be signs of infection. We do not know if MIRENA® can cause long-term effects on the fetus if it stays in place during a pregnancy.”

You should share your concerns about this possibility with your doctor; perhaps s/he can relieve your mind. Let us know what you decide.
