Long Term Mid cycle bleeding

I wanted to leave an update on my situation because I know there is NOT a lot out there for women like me who have experienced midcycle or almost continuous "spotting" on a long term basis (almost two years for me).
After trying every pill on earth (or so it feels) my doctor decided to do a vaginal biopsy (ps - a rather uncomfortable procedure) and had already done a vaginal sonogram. Basically both came back saying that I had hardly any lining at all to speak of. So she has decided to put me on NuvaRing since it is absorbed vaginally and consistently. She hopes this means that I will build more of a lining. We shall see I suppose! I haven't heard any horror stories of the ring slipping out during bowel movements - but if you have them - don't share! I want to at least try and go into this with an open mind :-)

Hi urspider02, welcome back!
Thank you for the update on your situation. I hope NuvaRing works well for you. Please come back and let us know how you like the ring and how you’re doing, ok?
Good luck and hugs,
Jill

Hi dfowler2006, welcome!
I think you’re right about IUDs and fibroids. The Mirena IUD Patient Information: http://berlex.com/html/products/pi/mirena_patient_insert.pdf says, under who should not use Mirena: “• have a condition of the uterus that distorts the uterine cavity, such as large fibroid tumors.”
A good article on Uterine Fibroids is: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000914.htm . When you see your new Gyn you should ask about fibroid management as there are several options depending on the specific situation and where you are in your reproductive life.
You might want to read the post in our FAQs about choosing a method of contraception that’s right for you. As far as a hormonal alternative, there is the progestin-only-pill (mini-pill) that is effective but it has a very strict time requirement (+/-30 minutes) for taking your pills on time. There are no days off, you take a pill every day and irregular bleeding is very common when using the mini-pill.
Another possible option is a diaphragm and spermicide which can be very effective but is rather high maintenance and requires dedication to use it correctly and consistently. There is a post in our FAQs about diaphragms if you are interested.
And the sponge and spermicide alone are also alternatives with effectiveness in the 80% range. You should discuss your contraceptive options with your new Gyn and see what s/he says.
Thanks for posting. Please ask if you have more questions. Let us know what you decide and how you’re doing, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
Anyone that can help with that information - please share!
Thank you Jill. The links were informative.
I'm single and 41 (been in a LONG term realtionship, 10 years!). Getting preggers wouldn't be the end of the world and I am not ready to say I never want another child. I think after researching the likelyhood of me conceiving is pretty slim between the fibroids and the thyroid condition. Sustaining a pregnancy would be highly unlikely from what I'm reading. I used a spermicide film alone last, hope that's enough!
My new Dr. the alternative one (not OB GYN) told me the progesterone BC pill would make me gain tons of weight. However he put me on 300 Mil. of BioIdentical progesteron because I am SO estogen dominate. Haven't gained any weight, in fact lost, which is somewhat worrysome. It has really helped with sleeping and moodiness since I am now chronically on my period! An older friend of mine who's been through this said don't be surprised for my pap to came back abnormal.
Can't wait to see the new OB!
Thanks again,
DeeDee
Thank you for your response. I thought that we had things in common becasue of the thyroid issue as well as the bleeding issue. My lining is also VERY thin from the BC pills. This new alternative MD I have started seeing was written up in a book titled "Living well with Hypothyroidism, everything your Dr. didn't tell you". He is actually running tests to find out what caused my thyroid to go crazy in the first place. Possibly hoshimotos. He's not content to say you're in "the range" so live with it. On an up side I'm feeling a lot better emotionally, especially since I am now chronically on my period, after he put me on BioIdentical Progesterine.
Thanks again,
