Question about Nuvaring & Ovulation
| Mon, 04-03-2006 - 11:27am |
Hi I have a question re Nuvaring. I have been using the ring for about 5 months now and This last cycle I didnt put the ring in at the same time it was removed . there was about a eight hr difference. My cycles have been about 31 to 35 days apart. My LMP was 3/8/06 and I should be taking the ring out on the 10th of this month and I should start on 04/12/06. Soory so long but here is my question yesterday ( sunday ) morning I was cramping not real bad but enough to notice, I was wondering if i was ovulating because I looked it up on a Ovulation calendar and that's about the time I would be ovulating. If anybody could help me I'd Appreciate it . Thank You!!

Hi mom_of-three_980003, welcome!
The times you remove the old and insert a new ring are very important because they establish the extent of your hormone free interval which should be no more than 7 24-hour days if you are to remain protected. If you were 8 hours late inserting a new ring that is considered a missed day. If that's what happened I agree with the other poster that you should use back up for the rest of this cycle.
If you were using the ring correctly an ovulation calendar should be meaningless as you shouldn't be ovulating, but if being late caused the ovulation process to start then perhaps that is what is going on.
Thanks for posting. If you have more questions ask away. Let us know how you're doing, ok?
Good luck,
Jill
>>Im worried because I have had intercourse fro that last week everday.Including Sunday ( yesterday) and I have read were the sperm can live up to 5 to 7 days.<<
If you are fertile sperm can live for 5+ days waiting for you to ovulate. At this point I think the only thing you can do to minimize any possibility of an unplanned pregnancy is to take emergency contraception. EC is effective if taken within the first 72 hours of intercourse and somewhat effective for up to 2 days after that for a total of 5 days. If you decide on EC time is not on your side so please call your doctor right away. For more about EC, see: http://ec.princeton.edu/ . If Aunt Flo doesn't arrive on time you can test to see where you are. A good test kit is accurate about 14 days after the day of concern.
Hang in there hon. You’ll keep in touch right?
Hugs,
Jill
You should not be having 30-35 day cycles when you're using any form of birth control unless it has 30-35 days of pills in it (though there are ways to make your ring cycle that long).
NuvaRing and other combined (estrogen/progestin) methods are supposed to make your cycles regular at 28 days under control of the hormones in the ring, patch or pills. If that is not happening you need to talk to your doctor right away! Are you taking any meds or supplements that could be interacting with the hormones from your ring? NuvaRing is a very low dose method. If you are using the ring correctly and your cycles are still 33-34 days I think you may need a method with more hormones in it. Please talk with your doctor and let us know what s/he says, ok?
(((hugs)))
