I am asking this question for my best friend. On her last period she switched to the pill from Nuva ring. She started the pill when she should have put the new ring in. The Dr. didn't tell her to use a back up method for a month. She suspects she can be pregnant. Is this possible? Anything I could tell her.? 2 weeks ago she had spotting. just a little bit. Last week should have been her period but she didn't have it. please help! Denise

Hi mamma24, welcome!

If your friend had been using the ring correctly and began her new BCPs on time she should have been protected. It usually takes about 3 cycles to adjust to the new hormones when starting or switching hormonal methods so side effects; nausea, breast tenderness irregular bleeding etc. can be pretty common especially during the first and second cycle. You might want to print out the posts in our FAQs about common pill side effects, irregular bleeding and taking your pills correctly for her. This board does recommend that when starting BCPs for the first time back-up be used for the entire first cycle. That way while you are learning to take your polls correctly if you are late or miss a pill it's not a big deal. I'm betting your friend isn’t pregnant.

Thanks for posting. More questions? If so, please ask. Let us know how your friend is doing, ok?

Good luck to her.
