Depo question

I got my first depo shot a little over a month ago and had started spotting the day after which continued for a week and a half. (my regular period before I started on birth control was usually only from 2-4 days)
(just some backround there)

My first question is, since my first period after recieving the shot was so light, is it likely that I will have another one similar (being so light) or not have one at all?

My second question is, would it be normal to have cramps while on depo but not have a period?

My third question is, after receiving the shot and having my "period" (the spotting for a week and a half starting the day after the shot) my boyfriend came home for spring break (long distance relationship) and we had unprotected sex a few times but he would pull out b4 ejaculating. I went to pph today for a pregnancy test which the nurse said was pretty much a waist of time since I had had the depo well over a week b4 having unprotected sex, so I ended up not having the test done. I am still worried about the possibility of being pregnant though since I dont know if I will have another period since I am on depo...my question is, do I really have anything to worry about?

I've been on depo for about 9 months now, i had spotting every month up until Feb. Not really much cramping either. The depo shot only takes 24 hours to start working so you should be fine.

Hi inloveandyoung, welcome!

>>Since my first period after recieving the shot was so light, is it likely that I will have another one similar (being so light) or not have one at all?<<

It's really impossible to say. Some women have irregular bleeding while using Depo-Provera and others don't bleed at all. The only way you will know is to wait and see how you do.

>>would it be normal to have cramps while on depo but not have a period?<<

Cramps can be a side effect.

Depo is supposed to be effective immediately if you got your injection on the first day of your period. As I recall, if you get the injection on any other day you are protected after 7 days. If it was more than 7 days after you got your injection before you began having unprotected intercourse then Depo should be very effective and I don't think you have anything to worry about. Any bleeding you have while on Depo should not be a true menstrual period (which occurs about 2 weeks after ovulation) because you shouldn’t be ovulating. So, if you need reassurance periodically you could test to see where you are. A good test kit should be accurate about 14 days after the day of concern.

Thanks for coming by to post. If you have more questions we will try to help answer them. Keep in touch and let us know how you like Depo, ok?

Good luck,

Thank you for the answers.

Jill, when you say I can test to see where I am, do you mean a pregnance test?

If so what are the best ones to get or are the most relyable? Im thinking I want to take one just to be 100% sure otherwise it will always be in the back of my mind, especially if I dont end up having a period or spotting (from the depo).
Thanx again

Yes, I meant a pregnancy test. Several years ago a comparison of test kits showed that 'First Response Early Results' was one of the most accurate ones.

Keep in touch and let us know how you're doing, ok?

Good luck,

i would choose another method.

I bled for 6 months almost continuously after my first shot.
I was on it for 9 months and it was another 11 months after my last shot before I started having a period again. Then I bled every other week for about 5 months before I became regular again.

I was always regular before and my periods lasted only about 5 or 6 days.

It also messed up my body. I eat healthy, but I still put on weight.

I have have been on depo for about a year, I first got it 3 weeks after having my second child. It stopped my bleeding entirely, but i do get the regular cramps. I've gained a bit of weight from it, but i've been trying since then to lose all my extra weight, by eating healthy and exercising. My weight will not shift at all, Does anyone have this problem, or an idea of what could be wrong?

I've been having that problem too, no matter how much i work out or eat healthy the weight wont come off. Other than that i love depo, but not loving the weight that came with it.
