One of the side effects is a term that starts with an "M" which is darkening of the facial skin or spots.

Hi small_peanut2005, welcome back,

I think Melasma is a fairly common side effect. Several articles about Melasma are: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000836.htm and Melasma: http://www.emedicine.com/DERM/topic260.htm

Laser Skin Resurfacing for Melasma
http://www.aboardcertifiedplasticsurgeonresource.com/laser_skin_resurfacing/melasma.html Which says:

“A laser skin resurfacing for melasma requires what is known as a "medium depth" resurfacing, which can also make permanent improvements in problems such as wrinkles and fine lines. Laser skin resurfacing for melasma generally only requires a single procedure, followed by approximately one week of healing time. This procedure is becoming increasing popular, as laser skin resurfacing for melasma produces dramatic results with a single treatment and relatively short healing time. The effects of laser skin resurfacing for melasma are long-lasting, although not permanent, and most patients opt for additional courses of treatment using laser skin resurfacing for melasma in order to maintain their results. The procedures are usually repeated every year or two, depending upon the individual.”

Cost of Laser Skin Resurfacing: http://www.aboardcertifiedplasticsurgeonresource.com/laser_skin_resurfacing/costs.html

“Typically, the cost of laser skin resurfacing is comprised of the surgeon’s fee, the facility cost, anesthesia, and pre- and post-operative care. Cost of laser skin resurfacing generally includes any necessary ointments, dressings and creams, although not included in the cost of laser skin resurfacing are antibiotic medications and other prescription pills such as pain medicine or sleeping pills. Also, cost of laser skin resurfacing usually does not cover the camouflage makeup that some practices offer for use after surgery. Cost of laser skin resurfacing issues should be discussed early in the process, ensuring that prospective patients understand the true cost of laser skin resurfacing. Because skin resurfacing is a cosmetic procedure, most insurance packages will not pay the cost of laser skin resurfacing. Patients can inquire about financing through the clinic, or can find means to meet the cost of laser skin resurfacing independently of the practice at which they receive treatment. Most practices require that patients pay the cost of laser skin resurfacing, at least in part, prior to receiving treatment.

More information about the cost of laser skin resurfacing can be obtained from plastic surgeons. Because factors in the cost of laser skin resurfacing can vary depending upon the location of the practice, questions about the potential cost of laser skin resurfacing should be addressed to the practice the patient intends to use.”

“2003 National Average for Physician/Surgeon Fees Per Procedure* (Source: American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) Non-Surgical Procedure National Average Laser skin resurfacing $2,317.” Then there are the facility costs etc.

That seems pretty expensive for something that requires being repeated every year or two. You should check and see what the costs are in your area.

Thanks for posting. Let us know what you decide, ok?

Good luck,

      Jill

Using a stable, high PPD sunscreen everyday will help. I don't know what pill you are on/have been on, but some have luck diminishing the spots by switching to a method with lower estrogen.

Good Luck!

Thank you again for helping out. I can't believe it's that expensive and it's only temporary, wow!

>>I can't believe it's that expensive and it's only temporary, wow! For one tiny spot, not worth it. <<

The problem with national average costs is that they are just that, averages, and may well be for larger areas than you need treated. That's why, if you are really interested in laser treatment, it would be a good idea to check around your area and see if you can get a free consultation and estimated cost for your specific situation.

Hugs,
