My DH and I have 2 kids, and we're not sure if wer're going to have any more. I've been looking at a bunch of BC options, and I noticed someone talk about IUDs. I don't know anyone who's uses them. Are the uncomfortable, or do they make sex wierd?

If you haven't already, check out the post about IUDs in the FAQ section.

I've had a Mirena IUD (has hormones) for less then a month, but so far I love it. The insertion was somewhat painful/uncomfortable, but now I can't even tell it's there (well, minus the stings). Sex is the same as without the IUD, neither my SO or I can feel the strings.

I was in the pill for 7 years, and honestly, I wish I had known aboud IUDs sooner (thank you board!). It's been so nice not having to worry about taking a pill everyday.

HTHs and good luck,
Allison

I have had a Paragard IUD since last August. I love it. I don't even know it's there nor does my boyfriend. Sex is spontaneous with no worries about remembering to take a pill. I was on the pill for many years and like the other poster, had I known how much I would like the IUD, I would have done it sooner.

It was mildly painful for a brief moment during insertion. I was on antibiotics for a week afterwards to minimize the chance of infection. My boyfriend had to use a condom for the first month also to minimize infection. I had to stop working out (except for walking) for a month and I couldn't use tampons for the first two cycles. But, those were minor inconveniences compared with the ease of this method.

I highly recommend it!

I previously had the minera IUD and now I have paragard. I have been very happy with both. My boyfriend never complained that he felt the strings or anything, and I can never feel it. So I basically have the same story as the other posters. However, unlike the second poster, I did not have any of the restrictions that she did when I got my IUDs put in. I just had the paragard inserted less than 2 weeks ago. I have not stopped my exercise routine at all (running, weights, and pilates) nor was I advised to stop using tampons. In fact, I used tampons the day of the insertion. So I guess my point is that not every doctor even makes those recommendations, but I haven't had any problems.

HI,

I have the paragard IUD and have had it about two months. I absolutely love it. I think it is the best form of birth control out there. The insertion was painful, but well worth it. Unlike the previous poster I didn't have quite as many restrictions. I wasn't put on antibiotics, and my NP said I could use a tampon as soon as I wanted to, but to wait 24 hours before resuming sex. She said it was perfectly okay to exercise and once it is inserted you can't feel it. It doesn't interfere with sex either.

To echo and earlier statement I wish I had gotten it LOOONG time ago.

Hope that helped,

I don't have an IUD now, but I did have a non-hormonal one for almost a year. I loved it!

I agree with most of the other posters. It was easy to deal with (basically nothing to do but check for strings every once in a while) and I loved no hormones. I was able to use tampons when I wanted, resume sex pretty much when I felt up to it again and I didn't get any antibiotics.

Although, I am one of the few ones that their BF did feel the strings. But, if/when I get another IUD, I will make sure the strings are a bit shorter, mine were on the long side.

The reason I don't have my IUD anymore is that it got pulled out by a tampon. Which, I will partly blame on the long strings. I also only learned afterwards that maybe it isn't such a good idea to use a tampon if your flow is very very light, such as mine was on the first day of my periods with the IUD.

I think I will go back for an IUD again someday.
Good luck!

I have 4 kids & decided to use the Mirena(hormones), I had no pain during the insertion, & my first period was only light spotting for 4 days. My hubby could feel my strings at first but my Dr. leaves them a little long & then she trims them down at the first recheck & hubby doesn't feel them now. I love it. I don't feel anything, sex is spontaneous - well as much as it can be with 4 kiddos :D & I couldn't ask for a better BC.

I've had the mirena for almost 3 years now and love it-haven't had a real period in about 2 years.I did have some spotting and heavier periods for the first few months after getting it (you never know how it'll affect you-as each woman's different)....but all in all I'm glad I got it and if possible I plan on getting another when this has to be replaced.I've asked dh several times if he can "feel" it and he says NO...and I can't feel it either (except for the tips of the strings).....good luck in your decision.
