Mirena IUD string

Hope this is not TMI.
I have had the Mirena IUD for 4 months. DH says he can feel the string during intercourse and it is not necessarily a pleasant feeling. Also I often feel really stingy afterwards.
Are both conditions normal or should I call my doctor? Any suggestions to alleviate the problems?
Thanks!

Hi shirlsssss, welcome!
Jill
Knowing what I know now, I should have gone back and gotten the strings trimmed shorter. My strings were way to long (which is partly why/how my strings got caught on the tampon and I pulled the IUD out).
As Jill said, if the strings are alredy too short, you can get them trimmed to the point of them not being there. That should be fine. The only issue will be when you want the IUD removed, it might be a bit more of a "procedure" than if you have the strings there.
Good luck and definitely talk to your doctor!

I've had 2 IUDs - and this was my string experience.
With the Mirena - my doctor initially left my strings way too long (they were like 2 1/2" out of the cervix!) So on my follow up visit, she trimmed them, but then they were only about 1/2" and they couldn't curl around the cervix - so they did poke my bf. He hated it. When I checked my strings - they definitely felt pokey and wire-like.
When I got the ParaGard, the first thing I noticed was how much softer the strings were. They're more like fishing line than wire. My ParaGard strings are about 1" long and do curl around my cervix, but in some positions my bf can feel them - but he says they don't hurt. He can just feel them. (I should note this is a different guy - that's why I had the Mirena removed...got the ParaGard when new bf & I become exclusive.)
Anyway - I think these strings are less bothersome because they're a) softer and b) just the right length.
