How do i tell them?

I'm 17 and have had sex but never told my parents. I have been dating my boyfriend for a little over 2 years now. I think i should let them know but i'm worried about what they will say. My main reason for telling them is to get on birth control so my bf & i can be safer. We use condems but i think the pill would be a much safer way to go. Help please! Any advice or conversation starters for the "big talk"?

I'm sorry, hon, but in our Community Guidelines (http://messageboards.ivillage.com/n/mb/message.asp?webtag=iv-bhcontracept&msg=17955.1), it states that you must be 18 years of age in order to participate on this particular message board.

Chances are your parents already know you are having sex. But, anyway, The pill is a good safe option against pregnancy but wont keep you from getting an STD. Using BOTH would be the best option. I can't tell you how many pp I know have STDs they got when they were really young, b/c they used only the pill instead of both. Anyway, if you have a good relationship with your parents, tell them in an honest and adult manner. If you treat them that way, they'll have to treat you that way too. Good luck!

I agree, they probably do already know. If you have a Planned Parenthood in your area you can get bcps for a very reduced price. Also some towns heaht dept also offer reduced cost birth control. Just some alternative routes just in case :)

Good Luck,

Well i talked to my mom about it and she wasnt mad but i she said "if thats the road we're ready to go down" i guess meaning she doesnt think we have had sex, which made it harder for me to get the nerve to tell her so i didnt. She was going to talk to my dad about getting the bcp. My boyfriend does not have an std---we had a long talk before we decided this was the next step. he's the only person i have been with sexually and i'm his second so trust me i've asked and i think we're ok in that department. I just feel like my parents are going to be disappointed in me. I hope they won't take this out on him and forbid us to keep seeing each other as much or quit giving us alone time every now and then. thanks for all the advice.

Thanks for your help. I thought about planned parenthood bcs some of my friends went there but i'd rather be upfront with my parents. I told them so we'll see how they react and what they decide.
