The first year was the worst for me....I've had the mirena almost 3 years now and for other reasons it's being taken out tomorrow....but back to your question....The first 3-4 months after I first had it put in my periods were heavier and lasted 14-16+ days and came every 2 weeks (YUCKO!!!)...After that they settled down to just once a month and got shorter and shorter where at a year I was basicly just spotting 1-3 days for a period.I had some spotting that didn't want to quit around that time and my dr put me on low dose vivelle patch (along with IUD) and that took care of that. After that I didn't have a period until this Jan where I spotted for 1/2 a day....GOOD LUCK....If I wasn't have problems with cysts on my ovaries I wouldn't have mine taken out.I've had LOTS of good luck with it-since I have chronic high blood pressure my dr won't put me on the pill so this has worked well for my situation.

Hey Casey,
I had my little boy on Jan. 11th & got my Mirena on March 2nd. I bled on & off for about 3-4 weeks but it was never heavy, it was more spotting than anything. I haven't bled since the first of April. In my opinion your heavy bleeding doesn't seem normal but every woman is different. My experience may be different also b/c I am still nursing my son. If you are stressed about bleeding so much I would call your doctor just to ease your mind or possibly find something to help.

Congrats on your son & good luck with the IUD.

I'm thankful to say that I did not have a problem with bleeding or even spotting after my Mirena was inserted. It was inserted the second day of my period in December (Dec. 15).... and the next day my period stopped!

I didn't have any bleeding or spotting again until mid-January... and then again mid-February... etc.

Basically the Mirena didn't cause me any unsual bleeding... I just had my period as usual... and it was lighter!

I hope your bleeding stops soon! Because I think the Mirena is awesome!

Hi Casey
I agree that nursing can have weird effects on your body especially when you're trying new BC. Maybe once you wean it will get better, it's also said that it can take 3-6 months for you body to get used to the Mirena so maybe you're just experiencing a bit of both. Hoepfully it'll resolve itself soon. Good Luck!

Bree

I just noticed that our sons are so close in age. :D I have 4 children a girl age 6, a boy age 4, another boy born June 3, 2004 whose almost 2 like your oldest, & my youngest son born January 11, 2006 LOL! It's odd to find another whose children are also very close in age! Your boys are beautiful.
