insulin resistance?

In my search for the pill that works and agrees with me -which doesn't exist, i'm convinced- i've been doing alot of research, and all it's done isconfuse me more-how much estrogen, what kind of progestin. i'm beginning to think my body isn't meant to be on these things....anyway, in my reading, i've seen alot about the pill and insulin resistance. Does anyone know what this means and can you explain it in plain english? i think it says pills can cause insulin resistance, and then your body can't get rid of it, and stores it in fat cells? is this why my butt continues to expand even though i know everyone says there is no proof that the pills makes you gain weight, but i exercise vigorously every day and can't lose a lb- particularly since i went on estrostep a few months ago. i'm not looking to blame the pill or be paranoid, but to find out if this could be a problem, because i'm at the end of my rope, between the moodiness this pill gives me and the weight i can't lose, and i'm looking for any answer.
sorry for that rambling mess and i hope it makes sense. i just needed a little vent there. thanks everyone. i'm new to this board and i really like it.
