Preventing your period?

I heard this one the Today show and read it in the newspaper about using birth control pills or devices to prevent your period. Is this safe? Is anyone doing this?
Does it delay menopause?

Just wanting some information. I am clueless

I've been doing this for years, taking my pills consecutively and only allowing my period to come 4 times a year. I've had no problems, no complications had a baby in between...I think it's great!

Thanks for all the great information.
I had never even thought this possible. I am interested in this just for convenience not to mention I wouldn't mind missing my horrible cramps. Especially when I am planning on a Europe tour next year and this would make life so much easier.
Thanks

I am going to see a doctor who is supposedly up to date on this new trend. I see him on the 23rd so I will let you all know how it goes.

I have cystic acne, menstrual migraines, endometriosis, IBS, fibrocystic breast disease, polycystic ovaries and PMS. All can be helped by getting rid of my cycles (all of which went away when I was pregnant). I think most women have at least a few of these annoyances but I seem to be rather depressed by all of them. I'm hoping this will get me out of my funk. I felt great while pg!

I have a question for you. Why do you even let the periods happen at all? I am considering taking a bcp continuously with no breaks at all. What do you think? I'm curious why you need breaks at all.

There are some who believe periods aren't needed, the experts quoted in the Lybrel article for instance. I'm not sure how long a woman can go on a combined (estrogen/progestin) pill before the imbalance in the hormones will finally allow enough endometrium to grow to the point that the progestin in the pill can no longer support it and you will get your period. The possibility of a super-extended cycle is something that you should talk with your doctor about.

Thanks. I will definitely bring the extended cycle thing up.
